AWAY FROM HEAT AND CONCRETE

Playa Destiladeras - Nayarit

LA CRUZ, NAYARIT - La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is the full name of a small beach town 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, half way between Bucerias and Punta de Mita. "Huanacaxtle" refers to a type of wood, and there is a huanacaxtle wood cross ("cruz") at the entrance to town. La Cruz is a quiet place with approximately twenty cobbled streets and more than thirty whimsical wall murals. Last year, local and national artists were commissioned by COMOX paint and Collectiva Tomate to paint the stories of people living or who had lived in these houses.  La Cruz has a leafy green park with bandstand, several good restaurants, a marina and an excellent fish market. The large, colorful Sunday market opened November 1st on the breezy, ocean side of the malecón.

Clinic took place at the very central location of the Kids Club, which offers extended half-day study of primary school and enrichment programs for children grades 1-6. Enrichment includes music; choir; chess; book club; and field trips. Included in registration is a healthy snack - fruit and peanut butter on whole grain crackers.  Cost is 150 pesos monthly ($7.50 US) or five hours volunteering at the Kids Club.  September and October were free. Due to social distancing, enrollment limited.  Sixty children waitlisted.

PUNTA DE MITA, NAYARIT - A 1,500-acre private peninsula, with its lush flora, two gorgeous golf courses and beautiful beaches and beach clubs, and home to the Four Seasons Punta Mita, St. Regis Punta Mita, Casa Aramara Punta Mita and 15 sub-communities.  There is also the nearby small town of Punta de Mita that has experienced serious water problem due to heat, lack of rain and poor maintenance of water supply distribution. With sometimes not more than four hours of water a day available, nearby communities have protested in the past by blocking off the road into the private peninsula. There is now a new water system in place, which brings it from Bucerias and Punta de Mita.

PEACEAnimals returned to the PEACE Community Center (no connection to PEACEAnimals) for a second clinic this year, where vet team and volunteers enjoyed AC in one of the activity rooms.  So many people arrived without dog leashes that we ran out of our giveaways on the first day.  An older gentleman with a tan, tired face brought his dog Mancha regarding a bloody tumor on her belly.  She had been spayed previously, and as the tumor wasn´t near her genitalia, it wasn´t TVT (transmissible venereal tumor). Dr. Poli didn´t surgically remove the tumor because if malignant, more tumors would appear. The dog´s owner was asked to come back the following morning for transport to the local vet clinic for a biopsy. If non malignant, tumor would be surgically removed. If malignant, Mancha would need five weeks of chemotherapy.  Though told we would pay for those expenses, the man didn´t return.

"Mancha" - perra muy noble con tumor en la panza - clínica en Punta de Mita.  El dueño no regresá para estar llevado a la una clínica en Punta de Mita para biopsia.  Si el tumor es maligno , la perra necesita quimo.  Ibamos a pagar los gastos, pero el
dueño no regresó.

Patricia Kelsey Shultz  (Winston-Salem, NC) -$200 US "In memory of Ralph D. Osborne III"

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  Due to C-19,  schools will not reopen in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit until the third week of August, 2021.

IN TOWN:  After many years, the fountain at los arcos  (stone arches next to small amphitheatre on the malecón) is finally sending out tiny spurts of water from the heads of the two dolphin sculptures.

COVID 19- Due to spike in cases in the state of Jalisco, beginning October 30 for two weeks, beaches will only be open from 5 AM until 3 PM. Restaurants to be closed at 8:30 PM, though take-out available after that hour. Also to be closed after 8:30 PM, bars, public transportation and all non-essential services until 6 AM the following morning. Situation more lenient in Vallarta than in other parts of the state due to economy relying 90% on tourism.

AWAY FROM  HEAT AND CONCRETE: Although never muggy, half of October was hot with  temperatures ranging from high 80´s to low 90´s and humidity at approximately 70%. On October 29th, and on schedule for the high season, temperatures dropped to mid-80´s.

NORTH OF TOWN:  Very beautiful and mostly emptyDestiladeras ("distilleries") beach in Nayarit for body surfing, good lunches at the one beach restaurant and long walks on soft, white powdery sand all the way to the W hotel.  Beach restaurants there are open to the public.  Forty-minute drive from Vallarta to Destiladoras and worth it.

Destiladeras Beach

SOUTH OF TOWN:  Just 15 minutes away by car,  sand castle-like conchas chinas ("Chinese shells") beach is a popular place for Sunday morning weddings.  At eight AM and there for a swim, a post-wedding "trash the dress" ceremony was taking place with no one else on the beach except the recently married couple and a photographer.  After sitting in the receding tide for several minutes (the groom preferred standing), the bride found it difficult in her wet, sandy wedding gown to stand up and walk without assistance.

conchas chinas - un domingo a las 8 de la mañana - el costumbre de  "trashing the dress"

FURTHER SOUTH: In 1975, the arches of Mismaloya were declared a Marine National Park. Colorful tropical fish swim in its waters and birds, including the blue footed booby, nest on these rocky outcroppings. A large condo development is underway in close proximity to los arcos, originally intended as a protected place.  To date, a breakwater has already been built, although there are apparently no reports of environmental studies having been made.  Views of los arcos from the curving two-lane highway 200 will be obscured by the intended building project.  Mismaloya residents and others have been protesting.

CONTINUING SOUTH:  LAS JUNTAS Y LOS VERANOS ("where the rivers join and summers") is approximately 40 minutes south of Vallarta and 282 meters above sea level.  The village gets its name from the two rivers that join there - the Horcones ("forked") and the smaller Peña Blanca ("white rock").  Decades ago,  it was a popular place for summer getaways from coastal heat and humidity..  Although there have only been a few spots of rain lately, the cicadas are still sending out summer buzzes here.  The breezy views from the enormous granite boulders are fantastic and there are good places in the river for dunking and swimming.  Lunches available at two adjacent rustic cafes across from the road leading down to the rivers and at couple of restaurants overlooking the rivers.  Ten minutes further south are the splendid Botanical Gardens.

LAST RAINS

los domingos - río cuale-  paso guayabitos - Puerto Vallarta      º      Sundays are family days on the river

EL PROGRESO:  A partially rural neighborhood eight kilometers northeast of centro Vallarta.  Close to the foothills, which block the rising sun, it was still dark at 7:30 in the morning.   Location for clinic was in an empty, immaculate one-story white cement house used for community events, including workshops.  The roosters were crowing and looking for scraps of food with their chicken families and friends in a large, nearby pile of trash. Over forty pets were waiting with their owners, some of whom had arrived as early as 5 AM.  Across the dirt road, a bare chested man with cropped beard, moustache and gold inlayed front teeth proudly showed me one of the six puppies born to his dog a week ago.  It was her third litter.

Perros:11; Perras:58; Gatos:29; Gatas: 64   TOTAL:  162!

Plus pregnancy terminated for cat with 4 fetuses (aborto para 1 gata con 4 fetuses)
Madrugada.  Esperando registrar sus mascotas en el Progreso.  Unos llegaron a las 5 de la mañana.

DONATIONS IN EL PROGRESO:  1,410 PESOS

The clinic in el Progreso was made possible by the generous donation of $10,000 US from Sharon Tognietti and Sarah Weber.  This will underwrite costs for 5 5/9 spay/neuter clinics.  This was the fourth.

clínica en la primaria Nicolás Bravo - el porvenir, Nayarit

EL PORVENIR, NAYARIT - A small town located in the Valle de Banderas, 15.77 kilometers (9.8 miles) northeast of Puerto Vallarta. Sprinkles en route with flashes of lightning in far away, pale grey clouds.  The clinic took place in a blue, air-conditioned classroom at the Nicolás Bravo elementary school. Bravo (b.1786; d.1854) was a Mexican politician and military officer who participated on the insurgent side during the War of Independence.  He was President for three three brief terms- 1839;1842-43 and  1846.

la última registrada fué a las 7 de la mañana - clínica en el porvenir

Arrival time for first persons at clinic was 4 AM.  The last person to be able to register a pet was a smiling, pale-skinned older woman wearing a bright blue sleeveless dress.  She had arrived with several cats in cages on top of a wheelbarrow.  It was only 7 AM and there was no more space available.  Across the street from the school is the large plaza with a children´s playground and tilted fir tree. A young woman wearing a black mask approached with her two dogs to say she had been turned away and asked what time should she come back the next morning.  The young, middle-size black female had given birth to ten puppies ten weeks ago and all had died.  Six in the morning usually guarantees registration.

STERILIZATIONS AT CLINIC IN EL PORVENIR OCTOBER 14-17:
Male dogs - 17; Female dogs - 47; Male cats - 30; Female cats - 51  TOTAL: 145
PLUS /abortos)  pregnancies terminated for 1 cat with 4 fetuses; 1 cat with 3 fetuses

DONATIONS AT CLINIC IN EL PORVENIR - 1,380

The clinic in el Porvenir was made possible by the generous donation of $10,000 US from Sharon Tognietti and Sarah Weber.  This will underwrite costs for 5 5/9 spay/neuter clinics.  This was the fifth.
También llegaron demasiado tarde.  Dijeron que iban a madrugar para jueves. Venían de San Vicente.  Arrived too late.

DONATIONS TO PEACEANIMALS:  Lauretta Boyd Charitable Trust - grant of $2,500 US

Ron Harner and Clint Harris - $10,000 US -  Ron is executor for the designation of beneficiaries of the living trust of longtime friend, Nancy Quillen.

Clare Leach (board member) - $50 US monthly for PETCO´s discounted pet food for clinics give-away

ADOPTIONS:  Big demand in parts of the U.S. for small dogs,  due to so many adoptions during CoronaVirus/sheltering in.  The opposite is true for Mexico.  More cats and dogs are being abandoned than usual during COVID-19.  Owners struggling to feed their families can´t afford to feed their pets. The three pretty kittens of the "Gringa" mama cat mistakenly left at a recent clinic were adopted at AngeliCAT shelter.  The family had wanted two females, but didn´t want to leave the male tabby behind.
3 hermanitos adoptados juntos - AngeliCAT  Ellos fuerno dejados por error en una clínica de PEACEAnimals.

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  On hold until schools reopen.  It has been confirmed that schools will not reopen in the states of Jalisco or Nayarit until the third week of August, 2021.  Alas.  COVID-19.

LAST RAINS:   People ask what it´s like to be in Puerto Vallarta now.  September, which normally is uncomfortably hot and humid with skies that look and feel like a steamy grey blanket, was gorgeous.  In  mid-October, which might be the worst weather month here, temperatures (high 80´s to low 90´s) and humidity (60% plus) have risen, but night rains continue and skies still blue.  We have the dazzling Pacific and Banderas Bay, rivers, jungle, and wide open spaces.  Many restaurants are open-air and with social distancing.  November will mark the end of the rainy season and its beautiful, often electrifying inundations.  Although daily rains were forecast for this week, there were just three brief downpours Friday night.  November typically is the end of the very hot weather until next summer and when snowbirds return.
playa conchas chinas - boda
UNEXPECTED MORNING:  The very large outline of a large heart on the sand was made with white and deep pink bougainvillea petals.  Straw baskets of tropical fruit were in the middle of the heart. It was eight o´clock in the morning at Conchas Chinas beach, and we were there to swim.  It was the same time for a wedding and blessing ceremony. Two Native American women dressed in deep blue held stone mortars with burning copal. The fragrant smoke was passed from head to toe and over the front and backside of all guests. Invited to participate in this traditional blessing of the joining of two hearts, we did.

At  the beach next to la Rosita" hotel at the north end of the malecón, swimmers gather every morning about eight, no matter what the weather is.  Colorful floaties keep them safe from boats and long boarders.  Not far away, bikers are at los arcos getting ready for a team ride.  On the sand at popular los muertos beach near the  modern "sail" pier, social distancing is observed by roping off large squares of sand.  In the water on week-ends, families cluster near the pier and told they cannot jump off from it.  They do.

AROUND TOWN:  La Fina restaurant - atmosfera #151 in colonia el Caloso  (close to gringo gulch and colonia Emiliano Zapata) -  Five wooden tables in an outside patio strung with small, colorful lights. After being seated, I asked our waiter if we could see the indoor part of the restaurant.  "Well, no, that´s the chef´s home."  Jonathan, our waiter, is the chef´s nephew.  Delicious food beautifully presented, excellent service and cozy atmosphere. Don´t miss!  Reservations via FB.

Restaurante la Fina - col. el Caloso
After watching Netflix´s documentary, "My Octopus Teacher,"was sorry to see it on the menu. Strangely beautiful, and deemed to be as intelligent as dogs and some lower primates, the octopus has three hearts, nine brains and 20,000 suckers on its eight arms.

The awesome octopus. Ten percent
of its brain is centralized in a highly folded, 30-lobed donut-shaped structure arranged around its esophagus. Two optic lobes account for another 30%, and 60% lies in its arms.  Difficult to say which animals are alright to eat and which are not, but I think the other-worldly octopus could stay off restaurant menus without too much inconvenience to restaurant owners and diners.  Maybe this very good film will dampen the demand.
