EL TUITO

"

EL TUITO.  Located in a tiny valley in a mountainous area, El Tuito  takes its name from the words “teotl” (“god”) and “tuil,” “tuitlán,” (“place of god or place of beauty”).  Driving south along highway 200, which is a partially serpentine,  two-lane road, one leaves sea level after Boca de Tomatán and heads inland.  Ascending into the foothills of the Sierra Madres,  the trees change from palms to pines, cedars and oaks.  After an hour of beauty, one arrives at this quiet and clean, cobbled town, whose outskirts are home to maize, sesame, sorghum and coffee crops and breeding livestock.  Very typically Mexican, the center of town consists of a central plaza and a tile-roofed bandstand.  At the foot of a grant María tree is a ceramic plaque certifying el Tuito as a “healthy community.”

The clinic took place in the patio of a private home two blocks from the square and in back of a colorfully painted mission-style church.  On Wednesday, our first day, Dona M. Carmen,  a woman in her seventies had pushed a wheelbarrow with her four dogs in gunnysacks three miles to the clinic. Because she lived in the high hills, volunteers drove Señora Carmen back to her home, where they saw more puppies.   After convincing her that she didn´t need more dogs, Kai Doyle and Vicky Mason returned the next day to drive the puppies down to the clinic and then back home in the afternoon.
