SPRING! ¡PRIMAVERA!

EXUBERANT YELLOW BLOSSOMS ON THE PRIMAVERA ("SPRING") TREE

The vernal equinox took place on March 20, marking the first day of spring.   “Equinox,” a word I hope to be able to play one day in Scrabble,  means the “time or date when the sun crosses the celestial equator.”  The tilt of the earth´s axis is neither inclined towards nor away from the sun, making the hours of the day and the night equal in time.  Daylight hours will now get longer until the third week of September, when the autumnal equinox occurs.

It seemed fitting,  though it wasn´t quite yet spring, to be driving to Rancho Primavera in el Tuito this week to deliver Bella to her new home.  After finding the beautiful year-old Weimaraner and after Matt Messner and Neil Sechan fostered and fattened her up for two weeks, we all wanted to see where Bella would be living.

I wasn´t prepared for so much beauty...  two hundred acres of meadows, streams, orchards, papaya, mango and banana trees,  blooming plants and vines, riding and walking trails in all directions,  and a small lake with a boat. Twenty horses roam free and follow one around for pats and nuzzles. A small green parrot flew onto my shoulder and stayed there for half-an-hour while I wandered along trails with Bella.  Shy with the six other rescue dogs who followed, Bella loped gracefully over green fields, jumped up on dark boulders, surprised when she stepped into a pond, ran fast circles around me when I sat down and rolled blissfully on her back in the grass.  After living hungry and homeless on dusty streets, Bella is where she belongs.

PETS FOR LIFE is the vet team PEACEAnimals employs for its free mobile spay/neuter clinics.  PFL has its own separate business and plans to secure approximately 19 funded clinics a year in the states of Nayarit and Oaxaca.  PEACEAnimals clinics will now only need to find funding for approximately 30 clinics annually, almost exclusively in the area of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco.

Cathedral in Nayarit's capital city of Tepic
CATHEDRAL IN TEPIC

This week PFL was in city of Tepic and the town of San Blás in the state of Nayarit.   Located on the banks of the Mololoa and Tepic rivers, Tepic is the capital and largest city in Nayarit.  The vet team always complains of the abundance of mosquitoes there.  San Blás is a small port town and tourist destination.  As in almost all parts of Mexico, there is an extreme overpopulation of pets in  both places.
SAN BLÁS, NAYARIT
STERILIZATIONS IN NAYARIT (PfL) -  March 19-23:  95 cats and dogs in San Blas; 52 cats and dogs in Tepic.

ADOPTIONS: The Centro de Acopio (Vallarta´s no-kill pound) holds an adoptathon every 4th Saturday of the month at the ex-city hall.  On March 22, eight lucky dogs found homes.  Unfortunately, no cats or kittens were adopted.
