BACK FROM BURMA

TEMPLES AND STUPAS OF BAGAN

VISTA SOBRE UN PEQUEÑO TEMPLO
BAGAN, BURMA
And scores of homeless animals.  Unlike Mexico, I saw no starving, injured or mistreated cats or dogs and only a few thin, nursing dogs.
Bowls were set up outside restaurants with food for cats and dogs, families shared picnics with dogs at temples and even the poorest people shared their bowls of rice with the animals. Thirty-eight percent of the Burmese people live on $1.00 a day.

Disembarking from the ten-hour river trip on the Irawaddyfrom Mandalay to Bagan, I felt as though  I had landed on another planet.  Over 2,200 temples and stupas, some dating back to the 9th century, are scattered across Bagan.  At the height of the kingdom´s power between the 11th and 13th century, 10,000 of these monuments were built.  Today, people live and farm amongst them, giving Bagan an other-worldly look.
LAGO DE INLE EN BURMA

Another stop in Burma was Lake Inle, where we boated past purple water hyacinths to floating markets and floating gardens growing cherry tomatoes and other vegetables.  Passing a large and beautiful timber building in old Burmese-style architecture, we asked the boatman to turn back. The Inthar Heritage House was an unexpected pleasure. It is a charming restaurant with delicious and beautifully presented food, with views of the hills and banana fields on one side and rice paddies on the other.  The surprise was to discover that it is where  the Burmese cat preservation project keeps its adult cats.  Pregnant mamas and babies are kept at a different location so their peace isn´t disturbed by visitors.
UNA DE LAS VARIAS CASITAS PARA GATOS BURMESES
Purebred Burmese cats in all of Burma became extinct years ago.  Although Burmese cats come in various colors, cat experts believe that sable brown was their original color.
GATOS BURMESES

With the cooperation of the China Exploration and Research Society and Inle Princess Resort & Inthar Heritage House, the goal is to reintroduce the original Burmese silky, sable brown cat into designated areas of Burma.
