MASSIVE S/N IN TLAQUEPAQUE

SANTUARIO DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA SOLEDAD - SAN PEDRO TLAQUEPAQUE

MUSEO DE CULTURA EN SAN PEDRO TLAQUEPAQUE

I have stayed in Tlaquepaque several times, but never realized until I went there this past week for the Calle Cero massive free spay/neuter campaign that it is a very large municipio, which equates to a county.  The small, historic and picturesque town of San Pedro Tlaquepaque, known for it ceramics, blown glass, artisans and many attractive shops and restaurants, is what I thought was Tlaquepaque.

CAMINANDO POR LAS CALLES DE SAN PEDRO TLAQUEPAQUE

Landmarks for San Pedro de Tlaquepaque include the plaza el Parián,  which is flanked by columned arcades and surrounded by food and souvenir vendors, restaurants and bars.  El Jardin Hidalgo is the main square, where a statue of Miguel Hidalgo Costilla, the "Father of Mexican Independence," stands. The two important churches are San Pedro and el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad.
STAN - DUEÑO DE  CASA DE LAS FLORES www.casadelasflores.com
We walked several pleasant blocks to the Museo Cultural, and though it was closed for renovations, we enjoyed its whimsical collection of human and animal statues in the courtyard, and the ceramic museum, located on one of the bricked pedestrian streets, was extremely nice. Stan, co- owner of the irresistible Casa de las Flores, the B & B where we stayed, is a charmer.  He gave us a 20-minute exuberant and knowledgeable tour of his enormous ceramic collection (he also has large collections of masks, paintings and objets),  and reminded us that Moses had described Adam as having been formed by God out of clay.   The name Tlaquepaque derives from Nahuatl,  the language the Aztecs spoke from at least the 7th century,  and means "place above clay land."

CALLE CERO´S LAUNCH OF A NATIONAL SPAY/NEUTER CAMPAIGN -  A ONE-DAY FREE CLINIC DAY IN COLONIA  LA COFRADÍA IN TLAQUEPAQUE - SPONSORED BY PEDIGREE:

We were told it would be very difficult to find the very poor colonia of la Cofradía in Tlaquepaque, and so hired Stan´s driver/guide, Luís,  to take us there. It was in fact difficult to find.  We arrived there after driving for about thirty minutes on San Pedro roads to a busy freeway and then to rocky, dirt roads with no names. After asking three people for directions, Luis spotted a TV vehicle heading up a muddy hill and immediately followed it for short distance.  I wasn´t prepared for what I saw - a theatre-size white tent with a large stage and a hundred white plastic chairs in front of it for speeches, and at the opposite end,  a small, colorful stage with red plastic chairs for children to watch educational puppet shows; three small tents to the right for vips and press; and to the left, four buildings and tents surrounded by hundreds of people with their cats and dogs.  These were the surgery areas, where long lines of tables had been joined together for  pre-op, surgery and post-op.  Only vets, vet techs and trained volunteers were allowed in these areas. Outside, pet owners were given assigned numbers that were called out at each tent or building and many waited for two hours to be called.  It was quiet.  It was orderly. It was impressive.  It was joyful.

CON PAULINA EN LA CLÍNICA MÁSIVA
This was an emotional and thrilling experience for me.  Paulina Stettner, director of Calle Cero, had been the director of PEACEAnimals free mobile s/n clinics for our first year.   We had spent many hot hours together walking up dusty roads in disenfranchised towns and neighborhoods, knocking at doors to see if people would let our vet team sterilize their cats and dogs.   There were many "no´s." And then on August 31st, there I was with Paulina, surrounded by hundreds of pet owners with their cats and dogs because they recognize the importance of spay and neuter.  Bliss!

LONA PARA CIRUGÍA EN TLAQUEPQAUE

Funds were raised by Calle Cero via Azteca TV and the sponsorship of Pedigree for approximately 40 vets to sterilize 460 cats and dogs on Monday, August 31st in Tlaquepaque.  Paulina will send me the numbers as soon as they have been confirmed.

GATOS - CLÍNICA EN COLONIA VILLA GUADALUPE
As I left for 2 1/2 weeks in California two days after returning from Tlaquepaque I was unable to attend the clinic in colonia Villa Guadalupe.  Soraya and her sister Almendra of Puro Gato to the call for help in trapping cats near the River Café on the Isla Cuale on Wednesday night.  From Soraya:

"Last night my sister and I attended to the call of trapping cats at River Café, we were able to trap 2 young cats (don't know the sex yet)  and  we also caught 3rd stray cat from the romantic zone.
We were able to see the pregnant cat and other small ones at the same area of River Café too, but were unable to catch more since our 3 traps were full (we lent our 4th trap).  The pregnant cat does not seem to be too feral.  I hope we can trap her before she delivers."
DR. POLI SENTADO - CLÍNICA IN COLONIA VILLA GUADALUPE

As a postscript, Soraya and Alemendra did trap the pregnant cat and three others, including one in the Romantic Zone.  The males were released where found the same day and the females kept in kennels for two days after surgery and being notched and then released back to the Isla Cuala.

EXPLOSION OF CATS AND KITTENS:  PLEASE HELP!!!  There are approximately a dozen cats, some pregnant that have t five months old, that need to be seduced into a kennel or trapped.  The older kittens will be in heat in a couple of months.  They are on the Isla Cuale under the bridge near the River Café, which is closed for the month, which makes it an opportune time.  Best time to go, with tuna anchovies or anything that smells tempting, is dusk or evening.  After sterilization at a PEACEAnimals or Colina clinic, they can be returned where found.  Please contact shannon@bestonproperties.com if you can help or need more information.
