RÍO DULCE TO LIVINGSTON

RÍO DULCE, GUATEMALA

CASTILLO DE SAN FELIPE DE LARA - LAGO DE IZABEL, GUATEMALA
After a four-hour ride, we ran with our luggage several blocks in the rain from the bus station to the dock on the Río Dulce.  The meaning in Spanish is "Sweet River." but it could easily have been named "Heavenly River."
The source of the Río Dulce
is Lake Izabel.  The crowded water taxi headed away from the river to give passengers a close look at the Castillo de San Felipe de Lara, a small colonial Spanish fort. After a slow turn past it, we sped back into the river, soon passing wooden houses with thatched palm roofs,  people paddling dugout canoes and children dangling legs over the sides of short wooden piers.  After the quiet, winding river passes through a long, narrow lake adorned with white water liles, we entered a dazzlingly beautiful gorge.   The sides of it, which reach as high as 300 feet,  are completely covered with wildflowers, palms, teak and mahogany trees.  In the water and in their rookeries on the cliffs were scores of white herons, pelicans and cormorants.  Guatemala is home to 684 different species of birds.  After an hour-and-a half ride of Gaugin-like beauty, we arrived at Livingston, a Garifuna town on the Caribbean.

The Garifuna people, who live on the Caribbean side of Guatemala and also in Nicaragua, Honduras and Belize,  are descendants of shipwrecked African slaves who mixed with the Carib people in the 17th century.
HERMOSAS NIÑAS GARIFUNAS EN LIVINGSTON
Sitting on a tiny beach in front of our hotel, we could see Honduras and Belize.  Livingston is small, with one main street leading from the main pier through town and to beaches on the other side.
ESCUELA EN LA ORILLA DEL CARIBE EN LIVINGSTON
Because it´s disconnected by roads from the rest of Guatemala, there are very few cars in sight, and almost every car can be a "taxi."   Boats are the main kind of transportation.  Livingston is very different than every other part of Guatemala, even though there are some Q´eqchi Maya living there.
CALLE PRINCIPAL IN LIVINGSTON - MIRANDO AL CARIBE
It looks and sounds very Caribbean, especially at night when people stroll the one street lined with small shops and restaurants,  and the mix of Caribbean and African music begins to play.

Days later, as we sat in the plane waiting to take off from Guatemala City, our last view of this beautiful country was of a nearby dormant volcano.

VISTA EN EL AEROPUERTO DE LA CAPITAL

On Wednesday, thirty-three cats and dogs had been sterilized at los Sauces clinic.  As Dr. Anthony was unable to attend the Thursday clinic, instructions were to cut off numbers of dogs and cats accepted at twenty.
The line-up had been exactly twenty, so we were glad not to have to turn anyone away.  And then a very old man missing most of his lower teeth and wearing dirty, ragged clothes showed up holding a small brown and white female dog on a large rusty chain.
He said he had walked a long way,and so we began the registration.   At first he said he didn´t know the name of the dog, and accepted the suggestion of "Carmela."  Then he said no, her name was "Lia."  After I crossed out the first name, he told me her name was "Paloma."  The kind owner didn´t have a phone number and didn´t know the name of his colonia, but he loved the dog and we felt certain he would come back for her.

SPLENDOR IN THE RAINFOREST

Tikal, once one of the largest cities in the Americas, is considered "the mother of all Maya sites."  The history of  Tikal is divided into three periods:  Preclassic (2000 BC-250 AD); Classic (250 AD-900 ); and Postclassic (900-1524).  In approximately 230 AD, a Mayan priest-king established a dynasty that made Tikal the dominant city of the southern Maya world.
Centuries later, in 682 AD, the ruling priest-king began the remodeling and reconstruction of the grand plazas and temples that had been damaged and destroyed by two other Mayan kings of city-states that are now Belize and the state of Campeche in Mexico.  In the year 900, the collapse of the Classic Maya empire began.  A century-long exodus took place and Tikal would never again to be inhabited.
VIEW FROM THE TOP OF THE HIGHEST TEMPLE - VISTA DEL TEMPLE MÁS ALTO

We spent a day with an excellent bi-lingual guide visiting the most important architectural sites.  Towering temples - one over 230 feet high -  palaces, small pyramids and other buildings are all constructed out of limestone, which was quarried on-site.

PAVO SALVAJE
The main residential area of Tikal covers approximately 23 square miles, much of which has not been uncovered.  We climbed the steep steps of the highest temples and walked through the architectural complexes, and on a shadowed path through the rain forest.  We saw colorful wild turkeys, a mapache, two large tarantulas, one of which I let crawl up and down my arm,  and swinging high in the treetops -  spider monkeys and howler monkeys - who growl rather than howl.   Returning to the entrance of the park, a pink-faced American girl in her twenties was waiting to be driven to a nearby hospital.  She said she had been backpacking in Guatemala and had just tumbled down the steps of the highest temple and thought her leg was broken.

PUERTO VALLARTA now has four certified "blue flag" beaches, which means every piece of plastic, every cigarette butt, etc. are picked up at the end of every day.  It also means dogs must be walked on leashes.

CLÍNICA EN LA CRUZ

March 4-8 - 173 cats and dogs!!!
Clinic ran one extra day and was paid for by funds raised at the Funny Bones event.

Mezcales is a beach town in the state of Nayarit, approximately 40 minutes north of Vallarta.  I drove there on Thursday with all the collars and leashes and vet supplies that Kathy Stein and Karen Hoag had brought down from the U.S.  Paulina and the vets were thrilled, and immediately started using the new breathing tubes for dogs. By 9:00 o´clock, the clinic was full and pet owners had to be turned away.   "Mona," the mostly Pit Bull I rescued on the highway near Mismaloya, was there with two LADRA volunteers and two more LADRA rescue dogs - "Rodeo" (handsome male German Shepherd mix)  and "Chey" (sort for "Cheyenne" - and is a very pretty six-month old female black Lab mix).  Even though Mona has been boarded for five months so far at LADRA, she demonstrates great enthusiasm the few times she sees me.  These three dogs and many others needs homes.  Check out LADRA on FB.

Anonymous- 1,500 pesos for Friends of Puerto Vallarta Animals, the support group for the Centro de Acopio.

GATA needs financial help with transportation to U.S.   Deanna McQuillan rescued this homeless calico cat and has spent 900 pesos on vaccines, a pulled tooth, etc. and didn´t know airlines charged $125 for in-cabin transportation.  If you can help get Gata to her new home in Santa Fe, please take a donation to Deanna´s vet, Dr.  Juan Tamayo - Viena 178, Versalles  224-0249   Note:  Dr. Tamayo offers a minimum of 10% discount for rescues, depending on time involved for treatment and meds and supplies used.

"Salome," the pregnant Siamese cat rescued by Anne Blondin.  Salome will fly to Montreal March 30 and AngeliCAT will take her 5 kittens, who are for adoption.  Contact: AngeliCAT via FB.

Mateo posted a great recipe for flea baths:   DIY ("do it yourself") flea shampoo in equal parts green dish soap, vinegar and water.  He puts his mixture in a water bottle with a little "x" cut into the lid, shakes the bottle, applies and then gets the dog sudsy. Fleas die on contact, but most are still attached to the dog so Mateo recommends a good brushing after rinsing off the shampoo.

There is no space for her in the small house, so Bonnie Jauregui, one of the owners of the beautiful Rancho Primavera in el Tuito, will foster her.  Canela has been assigned three different ages by three different vets: 4 years old, 5 years old and 7-8 years old).  She is vaccinated for parvo and distemper and is spayed, housebroken, leash trained, good with people and other dogs and curious about cats.

"COYU" EN ADOPCIÓN - PURO GATO - FB
Walking my dogs there on Monday, I saw one of the two kittens, and with the help of two teen-age boys, managed to lift up part of the cyclone fencing covering the window and pull him out.  The kitten, named "Coyu" by Soraya, is now available for adoption at Puro Gato (contact via FB).  His sibling is still trapped inside.

Shannon said she had counted five pregnant feral cats on the island between the two car bridges.  They will be very difficult to catch.

On Tuesday, Adriana Logue, who is another daily cat feeder on the island, caught two tame kittens, one of which was up a tree.  They are in Puro Gato´s care and for adoption.  Soraya has named the grey and white female "Candy" and the black and white male "Crush."  Contact  Puro Gato via FB if interested.
