CALIFORNIA FRÍO

Nicasio, a Miwok Indian word which means "the hidden one," is a small village in the rolling hills of West Marin in Northern California, where the fragrance of pines mingles with the eucalyptus.   We were there for two frigid weeks over the holidays, where temperatures in the early mornings were usually 35 degrees farenheit,  and sheets of ice formed over the car windows.   The beauty of the unusually cold weather is the sparkling white frost covering grassy yards and fields in early mornings.  As the sun warms the earth, dark horses and pintos race across shining wet,  green fields surrounded by painted white wooden fences.  Coveys of small, brown quail scatter across country dirt roads and and black and white Guernseys are brought out of barns and set loose in their pastures to graze.   A short walk from one of the two perfect little white wood churches is a wonderful homemade cheese store, and the cheeses are creamy and delicious.  In the center of the small village is the rustic and very popular Rancho Nicasio bar/restaurant, well-known in the San Francisco Bay Area for its great live music.  Even the wonderful Van Morrison has played there.

IGLESIA HERMOSA Y PERFECTA EN EL CAMPO DE NICASIO

My husband Ned and I arrived back in Mexico on January 3rd with California colds and are happy to be in beautiful, balmy weather again.  The el niño rains haven´t arrived here yet.

CENTRO DE COMUNIDAD - PEACE PUNTA DE MITA

PUNTA DE MITA:  Is a prong-shaped peninsula surrounded on three sides by crystal clear water.  The name derives from the Aztec word, "Mictlan," which means "gateway to paradise."  After 30 minutes north on highway 200 from centro Vallarta, the remaining 30 minutes to Punta de Mita are on a beautiful, winding two-lane road that clings to the gorgeous coastline.  Almost immediately after passing the luxurious Four Seasons hotel, the first possible turn is a westerly one on Hidalgo street, which takes one into the humble village of Punta de Mita.  Next to the plaza with its bandstand and painted white cement church is a blue cement building, which is the PEACE Punta de Mita community center.  In the areas around the bandstand, various classes of the organization´s education program were taking place.
CLASES DE PEACE PUNTA DE MITA

Because the pet turn-out had been reported to be slow, I took five PURO GATO rescue kittens and two young Chihuahua puppies to the clinic on Saturday to be sterilized.  Please contact Puro Gato via FB if interested in pretty Chihuahuas or kittens.

VILLA BALBOA MOVIE FUNDRAISER- Curdled pink clouds resembling oversize blossoms were strewn across the sky for the evening event on January 4th.
VISTA AL SUR DE VILLA BALBOA - FIESTA DE CARIDAD PARA PEACEANIMALS EL 4 DE ENERO

Cristhian Rios, manager of the beautiful Villa Balboa and party/wedding planner extraordinaire, filled the villa with flowers and candles and made sure there was plenty of good food and good service.  The film, "Ella Es Ramona," a charming romantic black comedy, was a big hit with the audience.
VISTA AL NORTE DEL COMEDOR EN VILLA BALBOA

Thank you to the Miller family for underwriting this event, to Cristhian Ríos for organizing the evening to perfection and to Beto Cohen, a friend who co-wrote and co-produced the film and sent it to me for this fundraiser.   The event raised 17,000 pesos, which will pay for several dozen sterilizations of cats and dogs.

Note:  Sadly, the very generous and gentlemanly Jim Miller died a few weeks ago.  He was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Due to non-sterilization and a lack of education, there are thousands of homeless cats and dogs living on the streets in Puerto Vallarta.  There are many hundreds waiting to be adopted in foster homes,  sanctuaries and the Centro de Acopio.   If you can foster an animal, have found a cat or dog, or would like to adopt a cat or dog, Please check our website on the "resource" tab for names and contacts of refuges, vets, etc.
