BLUE HAWAII

I returned to Mexico on September 29th after a three-week family trip, and was pleasantly surprised to not find steamy weather.  Instead, it was overcast with breezes and a drizzle of rain.  Current Temperature:  86 degrees; Humidity:  75%  Thunderstorms expected.  Feels fine!

PERRO DESPUÉS DE ESTERILIZACIÓN - SAN JUAN DE ABAJO, NAYARIT

After visits to foggy, windy and very cold San Francisco (September is usually Indian Summer in the city), I flew to warm southern California and then to Hawaii to spend ten days with my mother.  Dawn is about six o´clock, and is when I walked every morning next to the road that goes over the base of Diamond Head (ancient volcano) and that looks over the Pacific ocean.
EL MAR PACIFICO ABAJO DEL CAMINO DE DIAMOND HEAD EN HONOLULU, HAWAII

The air is perfumed with the fragrance of the pale pink and pale yellow plumeria that grow in gardens where white doves coo and green parrots screech.

A chicken with a home pecks daily in the grass next to the sidewalk, and further up the hill, a rooster high up in a tree is always cock-a-doodle-doo-ing.  A bit further is a colony of wild chickens and roosters that live on a jungled slope that tumbles down to the beach.  A friendly, elderly Chinese man missing a few front teeth goes there to feed bread to them, hoping to catch two of the roosters.  He says he has six chickens and he wants them to lay eggs, and they won´t without a rooster.  The man tells me that he gets the heels of the bread from his wife, who works at the Outrigger Club and that rich people don´t like to eat the heels.  Across the street is a dirt turn-about where tame, discarded cats (and more chickens) are fed by people who live nearby.  On two sprinkly mornings as I walked  back from the lookout at the top of the hill,  the largest and most brilliant arch of a rainbow plunged into the Pacific.  The promise of the rainbow is beauty.

Regarding the homeless cats on Diamond Head - All cats have been sterilized, with ears notched on the left side if female and on the right if male.  They are also microchipped, and if taken to the Humane Society, "owners" are contacted, who will return them to the same place.  I took my mother to the beautiful HS one morning, where she adopted an eight-year old male tabby and named him "Lucky."  If animals are over the age of six and the new owner is over sixty, there is no adoption fee.

Two days before I had left Vallarta, I jumped out of our car to take a photograph of a pack of street dogs on the busy four-lane libramiento (tunnel road).  It was a very good example of what exists in   but what one doesn´t always see in town.  Approaching the dogs, I saw immediately that six of the dogs were unaltered males and they were pursuing a thin black, white-chested female lab mix. The dog was obviously in heat and her teats indicated that she had had at least one litter.
HABÍAN 6 PERROS SIGIENDO UNA PERRA EN CELO - EL LIBRAMIENTO
All the male dogs were all attempting to mount the female, and soon a fight broke out.  There was a chicken stand on the road, so I bought half a chicken and tried to lure the panting female into my car.  She approached, but the tan alpha male chased her away and then all the male dogs were running after the female through traffic to the other side of the busy street.   Suddenly, a red car swerved off the road and parked close to mine.  A pretty, dark-haired woman got and quickly walked towards me.  It was someone I knew from the clinics - Lupita Rodríguez - and she was carrying a short leash.    Minutes later, Colette Zarry, owner of Colina free spay/neuter clinic, and Lydia Damato, active animal advocate and rescuer, passed by in a taxi, saw us, and immediately pulled over.  The four of us tried for about an hour to catch the female, who took refuge under a car,  but the tan dog wouldn´t let her move. He wasn´t interested in the chicken, only in the black female dog.   We returned the next day to the same spot, and happily the female was caught and taken to Colette´s.  She emailed me in California to advise that a black male Lab mix and a male Terrier mix had been caught the following day.  All dogs were sterilized at Colina clinic, treated at a vet and released to their "owners" two weeks later.
EN EL CAMINO ENTRE SAN VICENTE Y SAN JUAN DE ABAJO, NAYARIT - ON THE ROAD TO SAN JUAN

SAN JUAN DE ABAJO, NAYARIT:  It was an unexpected day on Friday.  I left our home at noon, drove north 30 minutes to Mezcales and at the stoplight there, headed east towards the foothills of the Sierra Madres.
LA ENTRADA A SAN JUAN.  ENTRANCE TO SAN JUAN
Parking my car near the plaza, I searched in vain for the clinic.  No one knew the name of the street I was looking for, so I asked a taxi driver to speak with Leslie, our vet tech, for directions.  He passed the phone back to me and Leslie laughingly told me that I was in San Vicente and had 20 more minutes of driving east.  As I continued on my journey, the area became greener, more countrified and with a fantastic view of the foothills of the Sierra Madres.  In a hurry to arrive at the clinic before all the animals had been collected, I didn´t slow down for a speed bump, which turned out to be a very oversized one that bounced me out of my seat.
EL QUIOSCO DE MÚSICA EN SAN JUAN - BANDSTAND IN SAN JUAN
I arrived safely in this charming, very typical Mexican town with festooned terra cotta-colored church and a white bandstand near a fountain and surrounded by greenery.
IGLESIA EN SAN JUAN
The clinic took place in the large front patio of someone´s home.  Mercedes Gomez Santos who has 24 rescue dogs, raised the extra costs of gasoline and driving time and Miguel Angel Rodríguez Camello, who lives next door to the clinic, provided some of the food.  Volunteers provided the team with breakfast and lunch daily.

A few minutes after my arrival, Dr. Anthony asked if the grey Nissan with a very large red pool of liquid pooling underneath it was mine.  Yes.  He bent down and put his finger in it.  Oil.  The speed bump.  Dr. Poli said to relax and that there would be a solution.  I was completely confident that there would be,  even though I only had two hundred pesos and my camera/phone with me.  The volunteers then set out a beautiful lunch of beef stew, grilled corn, cooked vegetables, a platter of fresh fruit and a delicious green drink made from a local plant.

After sterilizing 50 cats and dogs and after lunching, our skilled vets, Dr. Poli, and Dr. Pacheco, showed their expertise as mechanics.  Dr. Poli formed a large plug out of sugar and handsoap, jacked up my car and Dr. Pacheco slid under it and plugged the damaged oil pan.

Merdedes brought us 3 quarts of oil and refused to be repaid.  Oil put into car, which wouldn´t start.  Dr. Poli used cables and then Dr. Anthony and I drove in front of Dr. Poli, Pacheco and Leslie to a mechanic´s shop in colonia Coapinole,  near Dr. Poli´s home.  Poli bought a gallon of oil and delivered it to the shop.

PLATANOS FRITOS

I sat with a book next door at Esquina de Mariscos,   an attractive, open-air restaurant,  and ordered fried bananas while I waited two hours for the oil pan to be sautered.  Cost - 300 pesos.   Poli paid Rogelio, the mechanic.  After jump starting the Nissan, Rogelio, Anthony and I drove to an auto supply shop owned by Rogelio´s friend  He was a stocky man about sixty who was wearing a white sombrero and spoke with a nasal voice.  His eyebrows were thick and black, a perfect match for his handlebar moustache, and when he leaned back in his chair and smiled, his eyes almost disappeared.
EL MECÁNICO ROGELIO CON DR. ANTHONY
New battery was installed in five minutes by a young employee.  Cost - 900 pesos.  Anthony paid.  I arrived home at 7:30 in the evening, glad to have experienced a first-time visit to a charming town, a very successful clinic,  a great lunch,  and the kindness and generosity of the Mexican people.  (Vets will be reimbursed at this coming week´s clinic).
