IN THE WATER

FIRST REAL CLOUD AT DAYBREAK.  PRIMER NUBE VERDADERO AL AMANECER.
NUBRES ROSADOS-DORADOS NACIENDO SOBRE LAS COLINAS AL SUR

There is often a solitary,  white puff of a cloud on the horizon early in the morning when I look out of our bedroom window.  By the time I arrive at Conchas Chinas beach,  rose-gold clouds are being born over the Sierra Madre foothills to the south.

DESAYUNANDO EN LA PLAYA DE BOCA DE TOMATLÁN
Large, silvery fish splashed in the cove at Boca de Tomatlán as we enjoyed juevos rancheros and juevos mexicanos at a beach restaurant.
WATER TAXI- BOCA

Afterwards, we took the 15-minute panga ride along the beautiful volcanic coastline to las Ánimas for swims and lemonades.  There are almost always two women who walk the beach with round trays on their heads selling large slices of "Yelapa" pies- coconut, pecan, apple, cheese and lemon meringue.  We were there early,  so the delicious pies were still warm from the oven. Back in Boca, a large, white towtruck backed into our car as we were leaving.  Nothing to be done about that, and car repairs and body work are very inexpensive in Mexico.

CLOSE TO EL CABALLO ("HORSE) BEACH ON THE WAY TO LAS  ÁNIMAS.  CERCA DE  LA PLAYA EL CABALLO, ANTES DE LLEGAR A LAS ÁNIMAS.

LAS LOMAS DE COAPINOLE:  A 35-minute drive northeast, winding up to a largely rural area close to the foothills of the Sierra Madres.
When I arrived on Friday, only three dogs and two kittens were waiting to be picked up by their owners.  Because of the intense heat, the vet team had opened at 8 in the morning instead of the customary 9 AM.   The clinic took place under tied-together sheets, forming a low tent in a cemented outdoor area of a small empty cinderblock building. Two blocks away is a large unmown and unfenced playland/park with a cluster of mature mango trees.   Two small black chickens and a rooster pecked at the earth and half-a-dozen docile bulls and a brown calf grazed in the high grass neat the goal post.

STERILIZATIONS AT CLINIC IN COLONIA LAS LOMAS DE COAPINOLE OCTOBER 12-15:

Female dogs:  62; Male dogs: 19; Female cats;  34; Male cats:  22

There is usually a substantial discrepancy between male dogs and female dogs sterilized in Mexico.   The concern is not always for the female dogs that will be impregnated, but showing a photo of a dog with TVT (transmissible veneral tumor) wrapped around its genitals sometimes helps convince an owner to neuter his pet.   The discrepancy isn´t as great regarding the cats we sterilize, as many of them come from cat rescue organizations that understand males and females need to be fixed in order to reduce the huge overpopulation of pets here in Mexico.

ADOPTED!  On Tuesday, I took my friend William Goodloe to the Acopio for the second time.  With its added-on airy kennels and large, fenced-in grassy space for running and cavorting, it looks quite wonderful.  After showing us a few tan, medium-size female dogs, which is what William was most interested in, Manuel, dog trainer extraordinare, told William he had the perfect dog for him - "very sweet female, very clean and doesn´t need a lot of exercise."  At the Acopio for four months, "Minelli" had been hit by a car, brought to the Acopio and put into quarantine while her paw was wrapped and the bones mended.  William is mulling over a new name for his pet.
WILLIAM AND MANUEL AT THE CENTRO DE ACOPIO

If interested in adopting a cat or dog, there are many wonderful ones to choose from at the Acopio.  Manuel works with all the animals and can advise on personalities, which dogs are good with cats and other dogs, which dogs need the most exercise, which cats don´t get along with other cats, etc.  Open Monday-Saturday.  293-3690  CURRENT PHOTOS OF SOME OF THE DOGS FOR ADOPTION CAN BE SEEN ON THE FACEBOOK PAGE OF DOGS FOR LIFE.

VALLARTA ADVENTURES DOG ADOPTION WALK:  Patricia Meneses, organizer, advised that the dog walk will take place every other Friday at 7 PM.  The starting point is in front of MacDonald´s on the north end of the malecón and continues to los arcos and back.   Rescue dogs for adoption will be wearing neon green jackets that say "Adoptame."

EDUCATION PROGRAM: On Tuesday, October 11th, Leslie Caratachea, education director, visited the Primaria Fausto Prieto Sanchez school in Coapinole.
Leslie presented to a total of 120 students plus some visiting parents.  On Thursday, two girls from the school came in with their dogs and on Saturday, one boy came in with his dog.  They were given the 100% cotton, handblocked t-shirts.
