On a fundraising panga excursion with Karla de la Peña (owner of Boca Divers and co-founder of Ayudamutt) and captain Daniel, we found ourselves at two different locations on the bay surrounded by mega pods of at least 100 dolphins.  They were sharing air, water and fish with blue footed booby birds.

Curious, not fearful, several of them approached the panga, swimming under it and inches away from the sides of the boat.  As we left the feeding area, our last sight of the dolphins was of a line of them being propelled forward by a rolling surge of water.

A week later, it was an hour before we saw our first whales in the direction of Punta de Mita.  There were four adults, and after observing them at the required minimum distance of 60 meters and a time limit of 15 minutes, we motored south.
BAY OF BANDERAS - MARCH 2        photo:  Justin Romig
In addition to eight more whales, a mobula (type of ray) and six or seven dolphins, we noticed a large, male Olive Ridley turtle floating motionless on top of the water.  It was presumably a victim of a speeding boat. A
pproaching, we saw a slight movement in one of its front flippers and attributed it to a current.  And then, just a few feet from the turtle, it took a large gulp of air and disappeared.

BALMY WINTER IN PUERTO VALLARTA:  The brilliant yellow blossoms of primavera trees in town and in the countryside are shouting "SPRING."   Current water temperature in the bay:  76 degrees fahrenheit.  Air:  84 degrees fahrenheit

Los animales no necesitan tener una camada para completar su ciclo vital, puesto que no existe una relación consciente con la reproducción como parte necesaria de su bienestar emocional.
