SOMERSAULTING INTO SPRING

EASTER is a two-week holiday in Mexico.   Beginning with Semana Santa (Holy Week) on Palm Sunday, it ends with Easter on Saturday.  That evening,  as we were walking by the front of the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe,  we saw worshipers assembled and waiting to go inside.  Dangling over the heads was a paper maché, life-size figure of Jesus, with a large, metal crown of thorns encircling his torso.  Inside the church above the altar, a porcelain Jesus on the cross was draped in purple.

Across the street in the plaza,  people were celebrating Easter in a more festive way. Two dozen food stands were selling fresh fruit drinks, tacos, burritas, pozole, sopes, hamburgers, etc., plus crepes and other sugary items.  Colorfully costumed folkloric dancers performed nightly on a makeshift stage.  Red lipsticked  women with long, ribboned black braids coquettishly moved their shoulders to and fro as they twirled in long, full skirts.  Their male dance partners,  dressed in snug tan pants, rust-colored, fringed suede jackets, black cowboy hats and black leather boots, stamped their way across the stage like enthusiastic stallions.

Pascua (Easter week) begins on Easter Sunday and ends on Saturday.  These two weeks are a mix of religion and robust vacation time.  The first week of Easter is the busiest, with families from Mexico City, Guadalajara and other towns arriving in buses, trucks and carloads.  Traffic is bumper to bumper to the beaches, so locals tend to stay home.  The second week is less frantic and crowded, but beaches and streets are still busier than at any other time of year.

Locals are commenting on the unusually gorgeous weather in Puerto Vallarta.   The sun warms but doesn´t burn.  Mornings and evenings are cool, days are breezy and the air is delicious and seems to be constantly moving. Skies are completely blue and cloudless and the brightest-yellow-possible of  blossoms on primavera trees are astonishing in their splendor.

PASEO AL RÍO- JARDINES BOTÁNICOS
Bliss is a visit to the Botanical Gardens.  There are of course the extensive gardens and trails bursting with exotic, tropical beauty.  There is also a narrow path down to the winding Tomatlán river.  Once there, sandy spots provide an easy entrance into the cool, green water where there are deep swimming holes and large, granite boulders on which to sunbathe.  Rivers carry with them the dankly seductive aromas of rotting moss and vegetation.  With the rush of the river spilling over smooth, grey rocks,  there is also a rush of childhood memories of the summer scent of a river.

CABO CORRIENTES ("CAPE CURRENTS")   Cabo Corrientes is a municipality of Puerto Vallarta and marks the southernmost tip of the Bay of Banderas.. Because of the distance, I didn´t drive the four hours south to attend three separate clinics in Cabo Corrientes.  All photos of clinics were taken by Leslie Caratachea, vet tech and director of education.  Although PEACEAnimals educational coloring books were handed out to children, no school presentation on Tuesday because that day was spent driving and setting up clinic

Three small and very poor towns were visited - one day in el Tule, one day in la Cruz de Loreto (on the way to the beach village of Mayto) and two days in Tequesquite.  One of the local women provided meals to the vet team for the four days they were there.  A school teacher (on crutches as a result of a car accident) saved money for several months to pay vet team´s gas and extra driving time to a location outside Puerto Vallarta.  A vacant house was where the vet team slept and showered with buckets.
