FIRST PAW PRINTS AND FIRST CICADA

CONCHAS CHINAS ("CHINESE SHELLS")

Ours were the first footprints and paw prints on the smooth,  wet sand at Conchas Chinas beach at 7:30 Saturday morning.  Past the sand castle-like rock formations, the horizon was the palest shade of pink. The only sounds on the empty beach were the soft swooshes of small waves touching the shore, which contrasted with the amusing, cackling calls of large chachalaca birds in nearby palms.
CHACHALACA

At exactly 10:53 the night before, I had heard the first buzz of a cicada in our garden.  After sixteen or eighteen years of feeding as nymphs on the juice of roots of trees, they will begin emerging to begin their electric-sounding calls to potential mates.  Cicadas signal that the rainy season will soon arrive.  June!
CIGARRA - ES DECIR QUE PRONTO COMIENZAN EL TIEMPO DE LAS LLUVIAS

Our garden, filled with beautiful vines and flowers and the sweet fragrances of night blooming jasmine, ylang ylang and plumeria,  is where two poisoned possoms recently slowly crawled up and over a wall and died.
MURIERON DOS ZARIGUEYAS EN NUESTRO JARDIN - ENVENENADOS POR OTRO LADO

On May 3rd, "Tommy,"  the male tabby I had rescued from the street as a kitten eight years ago, was dead.  I found him under our bed in the morning.  He had been poisoned and had gone someplace dark to die.  "Dexter," our rescued grey and white cat, went missing the same morning and never returned.  The same day,  a neighbor´s three cats disappeared.  They had seen several dead cats in the empty lot next to their home.  A few months ago, "Red," our orange cat from the acopio,  disappeared forever and I understood he had been poisoned.  Years ago, "Betty," a tuxedo cat from the isla Cuale, was poisoned.  I came home to find her foaming at the mouth and "pedaling." She was dead within a minute or two in the patio outside our bedroom.

Our cats cannot get out to the street, but from our upper terraces, they can jump onto a couple of other roofs. It is possible someone is putting out poison to kill rats.  It is just as likely that poison is being used with the cruel intention to kill cats and dogs. This is a very common practice in Mexico.

PUERTO VALLARTA OPEN: Puerto Vallarta´s first ATP Challenger Tour was held April 30th -May 5th. Location for the event was Parque Parota, an empty lot lined with beautiful parota trees on the wide Avenida México.
CHANGING OF BALL GIRLS AND BOYS - PARQUE PAROTA

Three hard courts, lights and bleachers were installed and it has been confirmed that the courts and lights will stay.  Five-row high bleachers were rented for the Open, accommodating 1,500 spectators.  Daily admission was 100 pesos during the week and bumped up to 150 pesos on the week-end. We attended daily after six, when the sun wasn´t as strong.  Winners Purse - $75,000 USD.

Men's Singles Final (#1) Adrian Menendez-Maceiras(ESP)  defeated  (#5)  Danillo Petrovic(SERB)   1-6, 7-5, 6-3   2hrs:04:21

Men's Doubles Final Ante Pavic(CRO)/Danilo Petrovic(SERB) defeated (#4) Benjamin Lock(ZIMBABWE)/ Fernando Romboli(BRAZIL)  6-7(2), 6-4, 10-5

Petrovic, a very tall player (6´8") from Serbia with long, stick-like legs, lost the hard-fought singles final to Menendez, from Spain.  Thirty minutes later,  Petrovic was back on the court to play doubles.  After winning the doubles final with his Croatian partner, he took off his shirt (borrowing one later for victory photographs) and threw it to the crowd.  Petrovic proceeded to do the same with his shorts,  then hugged and shook hands with dozens of spectators, who responded in a frenzy of joy. The Puerto Vallarta Open (all male this year) was a big success and will return May 2019.  Winners Purse will be raised to $100,000 USD.

PARQUE PAROTA - PUERTO VALLARTA

AN EXTRAORDINARY STORE:  LACOMER (short for "La Commercial Mexicana) opened a couple of weeks ago.  Its parking lot, which includes covered parking, is adjacent to the Costco parking lot.  A visit to LaComer is like going to the Disneyland of markets.  It´s enormous and it´s beautiful.

"TORTELLERÍA" - LACOMER

The market is remarkable for its spaciousness and extremely attractive display areas.  The xpressa coffee shop offers a selection of coffees and teas, where one can sip a cup inside, or go out on the terrace for a view of orchid trees and the foothills of the Sierra Madres. Freshly baked rolls are served with your drink at no extra charge. Sandwiches available.
XPRESSA COFFEE/TEA SHOP - LACOMER - PUERTO VALLARTA
A bevy of very helpful,  bright, lime green-shirted employees make navigating LaComer pleasant and easy.
Large bakery.  Good chocolate shop.  Imported cheese island. A blue and white tiled tortilla "factory;" salad bar; gourmet foods... PLUS rows and rows of packaged and canned foods; clothing; toys; pet supplies; kitchen appliances, etc.  LaComer is, quite simply, sensational.

2ND ANNUAL "DOWN PUERTO VALLARTA" took place May 13 and 14.  Thousands of spectators cheered on 36 professional cyclists from 10 different countries,  as they raced 900 meters downhill from the La Cruz viewpoint to the malecón.  The thrilling finale was a combination of spectacular twists and somersaults at two high, earth-covered plywood ramps. A white ambulance with its door open and a stretcher on view was on hand.

IXTAPA - A town and municipality of Puerto Vallarta located 17 kilometers northeast of Vallarta and on the road to the charming, old mining town of San Sebastian.

PLAZA PRINCIPAL - IXTAPA

The clinic was located in the same location - in an empty, long rectangular room next to the ayutamiento (local government office). Across the street is the main town square.  The plaza, with its basketball court, very small cement playground, white bandstand and white wrought iron benches, is always immaculate.  No one except the gardener, who was watering, was there on Friday. There is plenty of grass, flowering bushes and palms, but no shade trees, and it is hot.

MISSING from the clinic in Ixtapa:  A large fan. Hot, humid weather was perhaps inspiration for the theft.

MISSING from the clinic in Mojoneras - two different owners of a cat and a small, white French Poodle mix.
ABANDONADAS EN LA CLÍNICA DE MOJONERAS.  LA PERRA FUÉ ADOPTADA POR LA MAMÁ DE LESLIE.  LA GATA ES MUY TIERNA Y SOCIABLE Y BUENA CON OTROS GATOS.  ESTÁ CON ANGELICAT Y NECESITA HOGAR.  CONTACTO POR FB.

Both animals were brought in for spaying,  and both owners gave fake contact information.  Leslie Caratachea, vet tech, took the two pets home.  Her mother adopted "Cleta," the small, white French mix.  AngeliCAT accepted the adult cat, that is described as "tranquil and affectionate."  From the photo, it seems she is a recent mother. If interested in adopting, contact AngeliCAT via FB.

VALLE DORADO, NAYARIT:  Located 12.6 kilometers northeast of Puerto Vallarta, the drive to the next state usually takes about 30 minutes.  On Wednesday, it took an hour to get there because of road work.

PLAZA PRINCIPAL - VALLE DORADO, NAYARIT
Located a few minutes north, on the opposite side of highway 200 from nearby, posh Nuevo Vallarta,  Valle Dorado ("Golden Valley") consists primarily of clusters of small, one-story cement homes.
LA DELEGACIÓN - LOCAL PARA LA CLÍNICA EN VALLE DORADO

The clinic took place in the delegación (government) building at the main plaza.  Similar to many plazas in Mexico, the Valle Dorado main square consists of a white, wrought iron bandstand and a small children´s playground. There are also a few grassy areas and a scattering of palm trees, but like the plaza in Ixtapa, no shade trees.

The entire area was immaculate.  Great additions - a tennis court and a basketball court. The church must have been very nearby, but I didn´t see it.  Like Ixtapa, with the exception of owners registering pets, the plaza was completely empty.  At 9:30 in the morning, the clinic was full and pet owners were asked to return Thursday morning.

THANK YOU TO LINDA STEWART FOR ORGANIZING THIS CLINIC!
