WHO ARE THE HUICHOLS?

HUICHOLS PROTEST OPEN PIT  MINING AT WIRIKUTA, ONE OF THEIR SACRED MOUNTAINS

HUICHOL YARN "PAINTING"
They are seen walking around town, the women wearing long,  gathered and brightly colored skirts and long sleeved blouses and the men in white or natural colored cotton pants and long shirts, both elaborately embroidered (electric pink is a favored color) with images of the natural world.   In Puerto Vallarta, there are several shops selling Huichol art, which includes yarn "paintings," woven bags, embroidered clothing, beaded jewelry, beaded animals and beaded pictures frames, etc.

HUICHOL SKIRT AND SHIRT
Known to themselves as the Wixarica people and "the healers," they were named Huichols by the Spaniards in the 16th century. With a long tradition of rejecting Catholicism, many of the Huichols have maintained their Shamanistic customs,  and like many indigenous groups in America, peyote is used in their religious practices.
Because of droughts, damage to their lands and loss of wildlife, thousands of Huichols have had to leave their villages for towns and cities, far from their sacred mountains.  Wirikuta, located between Sierra Madre Occidental and the Zacatecas ranges and encompasses 140 hectors of desert land.  It is considered the Huichols´most sacred mountain because it is the place where they believe the sun was born.   Every year between October and March, Huichols make a 250 mile ceremonial pilgrimage to Wirikuta, which is important to them for the peyote hunt and for the deer dance.
The Mexican government has granted 36 mining concessions to First Majestic Silver Corporation.  Seventy percent of the land to be mined is in the Wixarika (Huichol) zone.  Open pit mining, practiced by First Majestic Silver, effectively strips the landscape. High levels of cyanide are used, poisoning the environment, and enormous amounts of water in an arid land will be used for the mining sites.  The Huichols have been peacefully protesting the Wirikuta mine, which transgresses legal covenants that protect the Wirikuta area and the Wixarika (Huichol) peoples at national and international levels.

Note:  In last week´s blog, I incorrectly identified the pole ceremony as being performed by the Huichol Indians, instead of the Totonaca Indians.  Thanks to an astute  reader, a correction was made immediately.  If you didn´t see the correct version:   http://gretchen-peace-and-pv.blogspot.mx/2014/05/lopez-mateos.html

HOT CLINIC AT PLAZA CARACÓL

UNDER THE TENT AT PLAZA CARACÓL
DR. ANTHONY PERFORMING SURGERY IN THE HORSE TRAILER "MOBILE CLINIC"
It was the second scheduled visit of the PEACEAnimals mobile clinics to Plaza Caracól, a busy shopping mall about 15 minutes south of the airport.  On Wednesday, the team and volunteers spent a suffocatingly hot day either inside the horse trailer,
which serves as a mobile clinic when we have no indoor space, or under a small canvas tent.

KITTENS PANTING IN THE HEAT UNDER THE TENT
On the following days,  the vet team was invited to move inside the empty end of the mall at the McDonald´s entrance, where it was still very warm. A sweating employee at McDonald´s said the AC had been out for fifteen days.   The rains on Friday and Saturday nights and gave relief from the heat and high humidity.

WAITING FOR ADOPTION AT THE ACOPIO
WAITING FOR ADOPTION AT THE ACOPIO
HOMES NEEDED:  For the thousands of dogs and cats on the streets here and for dozens of healthy and beautiful dogs and cats at the Centro de Acopio, the city´s  no-kill pound. Open Monday-Saturday from 8 AM-2 PM.  293-3690. The Acopio is now holding adoptions every Saturday from 11 AM-2 PM at Plaza Caracól (back end of building near McDonald´s entrance).

LOST AND FOUND CHIHUAHUA WITH OWNER
LOST AND FOUND:  On her way home from the clinic, director Paulina Stettner saw a tan Chihuahua on a main road running frantically under cars.  She caught the dog, took it home with her and brought it to the clinic the next morning.  Serendipitously,  the owners were located the following afternoon.  They were visiting from las Palmas and had left their two Chihuahuas in the car with partially opened windows.    Relieved to be reunited with their pet, they weren´t angry that the dog they had planned to breed had been spayed.

BABY POSSUM FOR ADOPTION

RESCUED:  An adorable four-week old baby possum.   The original rescuer was a young female cat that gently carried the tiny animal to the back of a local hotel, where several cats are fed.  Fostered by excellent dog trainer, Marianna Berdejo, she says the possum eats everything, with a strong preference for mangos.   Ideally the possum would be returned to the wild, but having been fed and having learned to trust humans, it would be at great risk.  Possums, who have pouches like the kangaroos,  are in danger.     Contact:  casadefido@gmail.com  if interested in helping with food and milk for the babies.

A member of the marsupial family, possums made their way up to Mexico from South America in fairly recent times.   They are harmless animals that do no damage to gardens and are not dangerous to anyone.  Defenseless against larger animals and humans, these slow moving animals are sometimes beaten to death with a shovel or poisoned in gardens.  Very sad and unnecessary.

RESCUED AND NEEDS HOME:  "Mollie" was rescued by local artist, Judith Ewing Morlan,   who is moving to Hawaii and can´t take all of her rescues with her.  Mollie is a small, leggy, four-year old who is spayed and vaccinated. She is a darling dog.
Please contact Judith if you would like to meet Mollie.:  jemcontempart

ABANDONED AT CLINIC AND ADOPTED
ADOPTED: A pretty little brown female puppy left at the clinic for spaying this week.  The man registering the puppy gave a fake telephone and address and didn´t return for her. Paulina, who rescues so many animals, found a home for the ten-week old puppy.  This is Paulina´s fourth rescue and fourth adoption this week.

RESCUED BY ADRIANA AND ADOPTED
ADOPTED:  The little orange male kitten found  Adriana, who lives across the street.    I took him to the clinic and he was adopted the next day by her sister, Josefina, who lives a block away.  The kitten looks very happy romping with a Chihuahua on the terrace.
